I have been a doll collector most of my life. At three years old, I had 50 dolls. My mother would tell the story that I would hide amongst my dolls on the bed and she would not be able to find me. And funny as it may be, I remember sitting in the middle of all those dolls.

In 1959, my sister and I received Patti Playpals for Christmas. They were actually Honeymates from Sears - curly bobs. My parents loved Sears back then like most of us love Wal-Mart now. We kept those dolls for years.

When my father threw out my Patti Playpal back in the 80’s, it took me six years to find one to replace her. (That was well before eBay!) When eBay came along, I was able to acquire many (too many) Patti Playpals and dolls of every other description, as well! My goal was to replace all the dolls I had as a kid. People now call me Debbie Dean, PhD (Piled high with Dolls)...

Some had clothing, some did not. I began to sew for my dolls. I always enjoyed sewing but I have found I love sewing for the dolls even more!

Some dolls were perfect, some were not. After a while, I began to repair them. My stepmother is a Doll Doctor so she helped me quite a bit. I also began doing Spa treatments to the dolls—cleaning, removing stains, re-rooting their hair, as necessary. I even got into the hair styling business.
